How Can Film Affect Our Political Views

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

The media greatly influences how we perceive current events, and video-based media content is more popular than ever. As a result, the film business is often regarded as one of the most important industries of contemporary culture. Every video and film has the power to represent reality and change people's minds. Throughout history, the power of cinema has been displayed and used politically, socially, and economically.

During World War II, leaders like Adolf Hitler successfully exploited films as propaganda weapons. Unfortunate facts like these demonstrate the film's sheer power, an incredible force that has even fueled revolutions. As technology advances, political and economic leaders have used film to change and shape people's perspectives, either for their own gain or for the good of the people. They have the power to motivate us to benefit others and do good for mankind. In certain situations, movies can even arouse empathy in those who have never witnessed violence firsthand.

Argo and Zero Dark Thirty were chosen as case studies to investigate how Hollywood presents the intelligence community in film and affects the public perception of government in general. Although this is an exploratory study, the findings show that after seeing one of the movies, anything from a fifth to a quarter of viewers modified their answers to a series of questions on government. Changes in answers frequently showed an improvement in those opinions. These differences are striking after only a few hours of watching one film.

Movies are clearly incredibly influential in today's political environment. Because the advantages exceed the disadvantages, it is our responsibility to pick the right information for the appropriate audience and to shield young minds from content that will corrupt their thoughts and views.

People should be aware of what they learn from movies because even the simplest thing might cause them to do something evil or become someone else. It is very obvious that movies have a significant impact on society. Not only that, but they influence the current environment we live in and aid in the development of humans. In the grand scheme of things, it may be too soon to say how. All consumers can do right now is think critically and refuse to let films completely affect who they are.
