Modern slavery applies to the illicit exploitation of individuals for personal or economic benefit. Sex trafficking, domestic slavery, forced labor, criminal exploitation, and organ harvesting are all examples of exploitation and abuse. Victims are deceived or blackmailed into working and may feel helpless to leave or report the crime. This type of slavery exists worldwide, although it is typically masked. People can become entangled in the process of making our clothes, serving our meals, picking our crops, working in industries, or even working as housekeepers.

Victims of modern-day slavery might be born into slavery, exploited in their hometown, moved to exploitative circumstances, previously volunteered to work for a trafficker, or involved in a crime as a direct result of being trafficked. The purpose of traffickers is to exploit and enslave their victims, as well as the countless oppressive and deceptive strategies they deploy. Sex trafficking and child sex trafficking are two examples. Bonded labor or debt, domestic servitude, and forced child labor are all examples of forced labor.

It is believed that around 50 million individuals globally are enslaved. On any given day, 49.6 million individuals are subjected to modern slavery. This is a 10 million increase since the previous Global Estimates in 2017. 1 in every 4 are children, and 54% are female.
