Trigger Warning: mentions of rape and violence

Who is Andrew Tate and Why is He Being Canceled?

Andrew Tate is a former kickboxer and influencer whose extremely sexist and homophobic ideas have been propagating through the internet, exposing young boys all over the world to him. Videos on TikTok have been going viral, reaching billions of views, with him expressing his views on how women are men's property and that rape victims should "bear some responsibility" for their assaults.

Tate, who is 35, says in one of his highly shared videos that he prefers to date 18-year-olds because they have "gone through less d*ck" than other women in their 20s. He furthermore claims that it is much easier to "make an imprint" on young girls, which is also referred to as grooming. Andrew Tate has said more than once that women are property. Videos like these have received billions of views on TikTok alone. Andrew Tate is instilling in young boys the need to be aggressive misogynists.

The Darker Side

The story of Andrew Tate is considerably worse than what has been stated above. In Romania, Tate has been investigated for sex trafficking and rape. In one of his videos, he stated that 40% of his reason for relocating to Romania was that the Romanian police were less likely to pursue claims of sexual assault than police in the United States.

Platform Accountability

Many have urged social media platforms to take responsibility for Tate's actions; Twitter has banned him three times, and Facebook and Instagram have now banned him for violating community guidelines. Most importantly, TikTok has banned him in addition to one of his most famous fan pages. These bans are a key step toward preventing toxic influencers from spreading their dangerous behaviors throughout society.

Influence on Young Boys

Young boys' parents and teachers have noticed the negative impact Andrew Tate's remarks have on those who idolize him. Several of his supporters argue that his ban violates his right to free expression; yet, he still has freedom of speech; he may say whatever he wants, but he has no right to say it online; freedom of speech online is not a fundamental right.

A sixth-grade teacher has delivered a strong statement about Andrew Tate and the impact his opinions have on young boys. The TikTok video, which was uploaded on Twitter, quickly went viral when the teacher expressed concerns and advised caregivers to “be aware of what your kids are watching”. “We've been in school for three days now and within these three days the amount of young 11-year-old boys that have told me that they love Andrew Tate is ridiculous". “This man is really affecting the minds of young men", she stated.
